Meet Dutes Dutheil, goldsmith jeweler, mineral collector, and founder of Crystal Cabin from Tlell, Haida Gwaii.
Dutes is a self-taught jeweler, who started working professionally in jewelry-making in the 1980s. Dutes’ early works are in sterling silver. Today he works primarily in 14K gold and stone, also known as lapidary art. He has been collecting minerals and creating jewelry ever since he was a young child, even winning his first jewelry-making competition at age 12.
Originally from Versailles in France, Dutes made his way to Haida Gwaii in 1970, living on the wild west coast by Langara Island for several years.
In 1984, he moved to the small community of Tlell, where he opened Crystal Cabin, a local art gallery and jewelry shop, and built the Tlell Stone Circle, an outdoor exhibition showcasing Haida Gwaii’s geological history.
Working with the world’s most prestigious gemstones, his work combines the healing properties of stones with the magic of local minerals to create one-of-a-kind works of art.
In his jewelry, Dutes designs to best highlight and feature the stone’s natural beauty.
His original pieces are highly sought after for their impeccable craftsmanship and unique style.
Dutes currently resides in Tlell, Haida Gwaii where he continues his craft of jewelry-making and lapidary art.
