About this piece:
This ring was hand carved by an Indigenous artist from the Haida Nation located on the archipelago of Haida Gwaii in northwest coast British Columbia, Canada. The technique used to make this ring is called metal engraving. First the design is carved onto a flat piece of metal, then wrapped into a ring form, and finally polished. When worn, the metal wraps around the finger, giving it the name wrap ring. These rings are intentionally made by Indigenous artists to be sold to admirers of Indigenous art from around the world. Purchasing Haida art supports the artists, grows appreciation for Haida culture, and inspires up-and-coming artists to continue the art form. Each purchase includes a printed biography about the artist.
These wrap rings make wonderful gifts because they can be easily adjusted to fit all ring sizes. Let us know the ring size at checkout and we'll resize the ring before sending. However, if you don't know the ring size of the recipient, it's quite easy to resize the ring on your own or bring to a local jeweller for easy resizing. This service is usually offered free of charge and only involves slipping the ring onto a ring mandrel or manipulating with pliers to adjust. Resizing the ring will not alter the integrity of the design.
About the Artist:
James Sawyer is a Haida Indigenous artist who was born on Haida Gwaii in 1969. He is part of the Skidegate Giidins Clan. His lineage includes his uncle, Doug Wilson, argillite carver and author, and his grandfather, Ike Hans, argillite and wood carver. He is also influenced by fellow Haida artist and friend, Reg Davidson. James grew up in Richmond, British Columbia, and then moved home to Haida Gwaii in 1992. At that point, James started to develop his art skills by learning from the late Pat Wesley.
James started to practice art full time in 1997. Initially his focus was with paddles and graphics, then he began working on the designs for button blankets, vests, and logos. Later he started to work in wood and particularly with the steaming, folding and designing of bentwood boxes with relief carving. Today he primarily works in gold, silver and copper engraved jewellery.
