Yew Wood Halibut Hook

Material: Yew wood, cow bone

Design: This is a replica of the halibut hooks historically used by the Haida. This piece can be worn as a pendant or used for decoration. When immersed in water, this hook floats to the surface like traditional halibut hooks. 

About the Artist

Gene Davidson is a Haida artist from Old Masset on Haida Gwaii. He is well known on the islands for his creation of traditional halibut hooks using local and exotic wood. His halibut hooks are made according to the traditional Haida way. Gene created many authentic Haida tools, including halibut hooks for the full length film, “Edge of the Knife (Sgaawaay K’uuna)”.

Yew wood is a strong wood that is indigenous to Haida Gwaii and is found in small quantities. Traditionally yew wood was used for hooks, paddles, armour and other tools because of its dense and strong properties.
