Raven Steals the Light Pendant

This pendant was carved by Master Carver Ron Russ of the Haida Nation and features the renowned Haida story of Raven Stealing the Light. This pendant is made of yew wood and intricately detailed with abalone shell inlay. A small gold disk is also inlayed in the raven's beak, which represents the light. The bail, located on the top of the pendant, is made of gold wire. 

Yew wood is a hard wood from Haida Gwaii, which is found in smaller quantities. This type of wood is often used by Haida carvers to carve intricate details into fine jewelry pieces and small carvings. 

Ron Russ is well-known for his carvings of argillite, metal and wood, however he mostly carves in wood today and especially enjoys creating one-of-a-kind collectable pieces in yew wood. Ron belongs to the Eagle clan and is the son of the late Reynold Russ, a former chief of Old Massett. He is also a respected Haida elder and is committed to supporting youth and other artists in his community.
