Norman Bentley

Norman Bentley, Haida Artist

Norman Bentley is a Haida jeweler from the eagle clan. Bentley started practicing Haida art at the age of 12. In 1988, he completed an apprenticeship with world renowned master jeweler, Toni Cavelti. This apprenticeship was recommend to Cavelti by renowned Haida carver, the late Bill Reid. This experience immensely developed Bentley's skills as a jeweler and artist. The program developed his skills in precious and semi-precious metals and gemstones. In September 2001, Norman’s rings were featured in In Style Magazine, which declared his rings as ‘must-haves’ when visiting Vancouver.

Norman’s pieces, which integrate a combination of metals, overlays, negative space with cutouts, and a blackened patina, also called oxidization, are well-known and sought-after by visitors to Haida Gwaii and locals alike. Bentley currently resides in Haida Gwaii.
