Learn About Haida Art from Home

Haida Indigenous Argillite Carvings Vancouver Museum

Are you interested in learning more about Haida & Indigenous Art, but due to COVID-19 you're staying close to home?

The good news is that on Feb. 24, 2021, there's an opportunity to virtually attend a tour of Haida Now, an exhibit of over 450 Haida artworks in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"This virtual tour will provide guests with an overview of the themes and works that are showcased, touch on colonialism’s impacts on Haida, and reveal the resilience of their culture and artforms," according to the Museum of Vancouver's website.

At Crystal Cabin, we were very excited to hear about this exhibition because of its close connection to the Haida communities on Haida Gwaii. The exhibition was was organized in partnership with the Haida Gwaii Museum and is guest curated by Haida Curator Kwiaahwah Jones and Viviane Gosselin, Co-curator and Director of Collections & Exhibitions at the Museum of Vancouver.

Also we are really big fans of Kwiaahwah Jones :) She is so knowledgable and we always learn something new when she shares about Haida culture, values & art. Kwiaahwah created the Haida Moon with Eagle and Raven design on our mural, which was installed in the fall of 2019 at the entrance of Crystal Cabin in Tlell, Haida Gwaii. You can see a photo of the mural here

We anticipate that there will be so much to learn by participating in this livestream. This livestream will be led by Haida guest interpreter, Lia Hart, daughter of renowned Haida artist James Hart. At the end of the tour there will be a short question and answer period.
