Born to the Raven Clan of Skedans, Haida Gwaii, Haida artist Ding Hutchingson learned to carve from his uncle, Chief of Skedans. His crests are the mountain goat, grizzly bear, two finned killer whale, and moon.

Ding has been carving for more than 45 years. His primary focus of artwork is in metal engraving for jewelry and argillite boxes and carvings.

His argillite boxes and sculptures are very intricate, ornately decorated animals and crests inspired by the Haida oral history. His animals are carved in a naturalistic way and the scenes reflect actual events, sightings or observations he has witnessed in nature. His argillite carvings are sometimes finished with an ornate rope finish and hand finishing all over the stone, which makes his pieces gleam with beauty and appear effortlessly flawless, a look pulled off only with expert hand finishing techniques. Carvings easily flow with strong design principles. The argillite carvings that incorporate a box are typically decorated with cut-out and engraved metal onlay of sterling silver or copper.

His metal engravings also contain very small and intricate details, such as small strokes in a chevron pattern representing feathers on a wing. His pendants are uniquely cutout, with striking t-shapes, and with small engraving details, being quite recognizable and noteworthy. His bracelets are equally as detailed, leaning towards an aesthetic that feels from an older time. Ding Hutchingson spares no detail and effort in his work.
