Inspiration Behind Fungus Man: "He's just a Fungi, making his way to Ts'aaw Gwaii. Insusceptible to weakness, qualified by genus, it's genius. Anchored by his peers, to the common goal he steers. Fungus Man, take us to the promised land.”
The story of Fungus Man is an iconic story belonging to the Haida Nation, and recounts a time when Raven was trying to travel by canoe to an island on Haida Gwaii. He couldn’t get there, no matter how hard he paddled; the waters were too rough. So he enlisted the help of Fungus Man. Fungus Man, with his consistent nature and reliability (as he is literally a fungus that grows on the trees), helped Raven get to the island. Making Fungus Man an unsung hero and supporter of Raven’s plans and antics.
Cori Savard created Fungus Man as a way for more people to enjoy the presence of a Haida mask through a limited edition forton casting. The piece features Fungus Man, a forest-dwelling being connected to the landscapes of Haida Gwaii. Each casting preserves the original tool marks from the original wood-carving process, keeping the hand of the artist visible and honouring the way the mask was first shaped.
