Own a piece of unique art that honours Haida history and the women who are shaping it. This is the last remaining drum in this hand-painted tea time series by Danielle Louise Allard.

Entitled Tea Time - stl'aKam Butterfly, this drum is inspired by Danielle Louise Allard's great-grandmother, the late Florence Edenshaw Davidson’s famed bone china tea collection. The drum features a stl'aKam (butterfly), feminized through Danielle’s unique approach to delicate formline design. Further details pay homage to fine tea china, including hand-painted florals and delicate gold leaf. This drum sets the stage to reflect on history and artwork as one.

Florence Edenshaw Davidson (1896 - 1993), who is celebrated and fondly remembered through this piece, was a respected Haida elder, a renowned artist in weaving and button blanket-making, and the daughter of Charles Edenshaw. She became more widely known through her collaborative autobiography, During My Time: Florence Edenshaw Davidson: A Haida Woman, written with the anthropologist Margaret B. Blackman and published in 1982.

The photo here shows Florence with her own tea collection (photo source: National Geographic).

About the artist: Danielle Louise Allard (Haida name Skil Jaday) of the Yahgu'jaanaas clan comes to Haida formline design from a more than 20-year-established art practice in fine arts, painting and fashion design. In 2020, she returned home to Haida Gwaii with the goal of immersing herself in the Haida arts. With the support of her mentor, master Haida artist Christian White, Danielle deepened her understanding of the principles and discipline of formline design. Today, her work embodies a feminine flow, merging her Haida heritage with the unique strengths shaped through her broader artistic practice.
