Lazy Son-in-Law | Wasco & Killer Whales | Original Painting by Shoshannah Greene (Haida)

Artist Statement:

This painting was an experimental piece, playing with different colour combinations and learning new techniques with gouache paint.

The design is inspired by the Haida story, “The Lazy-Son-in-Law,” where the Wasco, a supernatural sea wolf, captures his daily catch, three young killer whales. However, something caught his attention above him. I imagine what catches his attention is the mother of the young whales he just caught. Angered by her tragic loss, this is moments before the epic battle for revenge of her young.

The Wasco is a supernatural being, part wolf and part killer whale, that appears in Haida stories as a powerful hunter. Wasco is such a force that he feasts on killer whales, and in artworks that recount this story, the Wasco is depicted as chasing after or capturing killer whales. In Haida stories, Wasco lives in Spirit Lake, which is a lake behind the village of Skidegate on the islands of Haida Gwaii.
