Haida Gwaii’s Natural Geology

The Tlell Stone Circle was built in 2002 in Tlell, Haida Gwaii by lapidary artist and rockhounder, Dutes Dutheil. He built this Stone Circle to share his knowledge of stones and introduce the people of Haida Gwaii to the islands’ natural geology.

Arranged in an ancient medicine wheel, each of the eight stones is supported by a concrete pillar and held by organically shaped steel. In the middle of the circle rests a piece of basalt from Haida Gwaii which resembles the Shiva Lingams from India.

The Stone Circle opened with a sacred ceremony and was blessed by healers and Haida dignitaries. Research on the origin and formation of each stone was conducted by geologists and local people from each island community attended this special event.

During the tertiary age (60 million years ago) gas pockets formed in the lava flows of the Masset Formation up to 18,000 feet thick. This is a specimens of Masset volcanics with Druzy Quartz.

This amazing specimen is petrified wood from a tree which proudly stood 60 million years ago in the ancient rainforest of Haida Gwaii.
