Box Design: This finely carved argillite box presents a layered Haida narrative brought to life through formline carving and sterling silver inlay. The scene begins with a woman at the shoreline, unaware of the killer whale rising beneath her. In a single moment, she is lifted and carried into the whale’s underwater world while Thunderbird circles above, observing. The outcome remains open, inviting reflection rather than resolution.
As the story unfolds around the box, additional killer whales move through the composition, pursued by Thunderbird. Each side contributes to the tension between sea and sky, with movement and balance carefully maintained throughout.
The box is finished with softly rounded corners and precisely cut sheets of sterling silver that follow the contours of the form. Subtle details, including small frogs and flowing formline elements around the base, act as quiet witnesses, referencing the presence of the spirit world observing the scene.
A rare and meaningful work, this box stands as a striking example of Haida argillite carving and contemporary expression rooted in cultural knowledge.
