How to Find Your Ring Size
To determine your ring size, we recommend that you have your ring sized by a local jeweller. Let them know the width of the ring you're looking to purchase. For wider rings you may need to go up 1/4 to 1/2 ring size.
Also, there are many online sizing guides that you can print and cutout to determine your ring size.
Use a string to measure the smallest point of your wrist, then measure the length of the string on a ruler.
The standard size bracelets on our website will fit a customer with wrist size 5 - 7 inches. For wrist sizes larger than 7 inches, please contact us.
After purchasing can the Haida metal rings be resized?
Yes they can.
Wrap rings can be adjusted up or down. The narrow wrap rings can be easily re-sized at home. Wider wrap rings can be re-sized with the help of a jeweller.
Bands can be stretched (made bigger) or domed (made smaller) by 1/4 to 1/2 size, depending on the artist.
Bands with abalone or gemstones cannot be resized. Changing the size of the band can comprise the strength of the abalone or gemstone setting. However, wrap rings with abalone or gemstones can be adjusted.
We work with a network of over 20 local artists and would be happy to make your custom project come to life. Please visit our Custom Orders page for more information.
What do the Haida designs mean?
In Haida culture, the meanings of designs and symbols are in context of oral histories passed down through generations.
Some stories have been lost due to residential schooling and colonization, during which time the Haida were outlawed from practicing their language and culture. However, many stories remain and along with the Haida language, are being revitalized. Today Haida elders continue to share these stories with the next generation.
Each design is created based on the artist’s unique style and their personal and familial interpretation of Haida stories. To begin to understand the meaning of the art is a journey to understand the people, culture, histories, and the islands of Haida Gwaii.
In the product description of each item we've included a short and simplistic meaning of the design.
To learn more about the meanings behind Haida designs, mythologies and culture, we recommend purchasing a book written by a Haida artist in the 'Books' section of our website. To start, books that we recommend are The Raven Steals the Light, Out of Concealment, The Magic Leaves, Potlatch as Pedagogy, and During My Time.
How to Choose a Haida design
We encourage you to select the design that you feel most drawn to. Haida artists create these pieces to share their art and culture beyond Haida Gwaii. We hope you enjoy them. Haawa (thank you).
We recommend polishing gold, silver, and copper Haida carved jewelry with a polishing cloth. You can purchase one here on our website. These are the polishing cloths we've been using in our store for years and they really get the job done.
You can also bring your gold, silver, or copper jewelry to be professionally cleaned by a jeweller using a steam cleaner or ultrasonic.
However, not all jewelry should be professionally cleaned. Do not use a steam cleaner or ultrasonic on jewelry which is intentionally oxidized (blackened) with a patina; jewelry which contains abalone inlay; and jewelry with gemstones (consult with your jeweller about the gemstone, as the hardness and makeup of some gemstones should not be ultrasonically cleaned).
Swimming & Showering
We recommend against wearing your metal jewelry while swimming and showering. It can cause damage to the jewelry over time.
When storing for long periods of time, we recommend polishing your jewelry with a polishing cloth and then storing in an air tight small jewelry plastic ziploc bag.
Argillite is a soft stone and should be worn with care.
Do not wear your argillite while swimming or showering. Over time this will damage the stone and make it vulnerable to cracks.
Wear with care. Make sure that jewelry is securely worn. If argillite falls on a hard surface it could be prone to breakage.
You do not need to polish argillite. As you wear a piece of argillite jewelry, the natural oils of your skin will enhance the stone’s shine.
If you have a metal allergy please contact us for options.
For have access to a wide variety of metal findings, from earwires to claps to ensure that you can wear our jewelry safely and with comfort.
We also offer custom metal carvings in copper, sterling silver and gold. Visit our Custom Orders page to learn more.
Yes we do. Please purchase our Engraving Service here.
Copper jewelry will naturally oxidize overtime due to exposure to moisture in the air. The wearer's natural body oil, ph of the skin, and lotions will also contribute to oxidization.
Some ways to reduce the oxidation of copper include keeping copper polished with a polishing cloth then store in an airtight plastic ziploc bag. There are also clear coats on the market that can be applied to copper jewelry. For a polishing cloth, we recommend this one.
Many customers who purchase copper like the oxidization or patina that forms on copper after wearing it. However, if you prefer the shiny rose colour of copper, 14K rose gold is a great alternative that does not tarnish. You can contact us to inquire about Custom Orders in rose gold.
