Description

This one-of-a-kind Haida argillite carving is a Haida jewelry pendant crafted by Sean Brennan. Don't miss out on this artist's rarely available works.

In the Haida language, the flicker bird shares its name with one of the Haida formline shapes found in the Haida system of art and design, the split U shape, which stands for ‘flicker feather’. You can see this connection come to life, as a flicker’s tail feather fits perfectly inside a U shape to create the split U.

Chiefs often placed the bright orange and red feathers of red-shafted flickers upright along the edge of their headdresses. The flicker's feathers stand as a symbol of prestige, a mark of status, a sign of rank, and good luck.

Sean's work features elaborate detail and texture on the flicker's head, hand-carved from argillite, and he used an abalone shell for the eye inlay. The argillite from Haida Gwaii is found on one mountaintop and is protected by the Haida Nation as a stone exclusively carved by the Haida people.
