Gregory Williams, Haida Artist

Haida artist, Gregory Williams was born in 1972 and has been creating art since 1984. He brings a different skill set to his work as an artist. He is influenced by contemporary art, bring different texturizing methods to his work and inlay is also one of his specialties. He attended the American School of Luthier in California to study guitar building and master inlaying with Larry Robinson.

He has received guidance in developing his art form from Haida artists Norman Bentley, Jim Edenshaw, Guujaaw, Gwaai Edenshaw, Ding Hutchingson, Robert Cross, Nelson Cross, Wayne Wilson, Clarence Mills, Jim Hart, Pat Wesley, Bill Bellis, and non-Haida jeweler, Jesse Sarber.

His design work is also influenced by his work in tattooing. Williams is trained as a professional tattoo artist and is the owner of the local tattoo shop, Haida Inkk. He is the first formally trained Haida tattoo artist in more than 100 years. In the community Gregory is regarded as a successful business owner, artist, and is a big contributor, along with his partner, to cancer fundraising on Haida Gwaii.
