The paddle showcases a blue heron and an eagle, each representing Billy Yovanovich's traditional crests. The heron symbolizes patience and grace, while the eagle stands for speed and strength. Together, they serve as powerful reminders of these essential qualities to the art of fishing. The rope finish carved in the handles represents the fisherman's lines in the water.
The artist, Billy Yovanovich, also danced this paddle at the launch of the Beloved Canoe, Tluuwee Kwiiyaas on August 24, 2024, making this paddle truly special.
Billy Yovanovich, who is a skilled woodcarver, carves his paddles with the intention of manipulating the traditional paddle design to suit his vision. He carves out an additional surface of the paddle just below the handle. This allows for more space to fully express his design concepts. As well as a larger lower paddle blade, that together become the perfect canvas for expressing these stories.
