Artist Statement:

The Sea Grizzly is a supernatural crest figure used within certain clans in Haida Gwaii. He is depicted with bear features, pectorals, a dorsal fin, and usually a whale-like tail. Similar to the Wasco, a supernatural sea wolf.

In this piece, the Sea Grizzly's face is at the bottom, and the tail is at the top. Above the eyes are his ears, created by his toes nestling above his head. The ovoids on the sides are his paw pads, which in an abstract way, connect his paw pads to his toes. Above his toes are his pectoral fins.

The middle blank section is his dorsal fin. I kept the dorsal fin blank to give it a breath of air between the design.

Shoshannah Greene was born and raised on Haida Gwaii, on the traditional territory of her paternal ancestors. She was adopted into the Cumshewa Eagle Clan and given the Haida name SGid Gang.Xaal, meaning wild rose. Since childhood, Shoshannah loved to share stories and express her thoughts visually.
