Eagle Shield Meaning: Eagle, a main crest of the Haida people, comes to life on this 22K gold shield by Haida artist, Jesse Brillon. Shields, typically made of hammered copper, are a symbol of wealth in Haida culture. Created using the technique of repoussé, which shapes metal through meticulous hammering, this is a rare opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind work of art by Jesse Brillon, known for his excellence in repoussé, chasing, and lost-wax casting.
Jesse’s interest in Haida art began when he was a young boy, influenced strongly by his heritage. Jesse’s family presented him with a silver repoussé Shark bracelet by Haida artist Don Yeomans. This gift sparked Jesse’s desire to learn to carve. To start his training, Jesse apprenticed with Don in Vancouver. He then moved to Hazelton to study the art of repoussé with Gitxsan artist Philip Janze. Jesse’s jewelry-making skills developed immensely during this time.
Jesse continues to create museum-quality pieces individualized by their fineness, boldness, and depth. Jesse’s works are held in private collections globally and have been exhibited across North America.
